SR-7 Cougar Strike Corvette | |

The SR-7 Cougar is a new classification of Corvette, referred to as a ‘Strike’ Corvette (though plans are in motion to add a Capital ship class referred to as ‘Striker’ to more accurately classify such vessels.) Somewhat smaller than a CR-90, the Cougar is designed to get in fast while absorbing incoming fire, let loose its devastating firepower, and get out at high speed; almost a huge torpedo bomber or gunship in design philosophy. It is well armored and shielded for its size, and is faster than any other Corvette design, in keeping with its intended role. In addition, it possesses several features designed to enhance its performance as an attack craft. The Cougar is normally fast and well-shielded for its size- 90 MGLT and 500 SBD respectively- but during attack runs, special secondary generators are engaged, boosting speed to an astounding 110 MGLT (equal to many modern starfighters) and reinforcing the shields to 750 SBD. In ‘Boost’ mode, the Cougar can survive or avoid heavy bombardment long enough to fire all its weapons at point-blank range, then evade fire long enough to escape. Boost mode cannot be maintained for long periods- the overstress causes a great deal of wear on the power systems and engine components- but the extra edge is an incalculable benefit in modern warfare. The main firepower of the Cougar is in the ‘wing’ mounts, which consist of four heavy turbolaser cannons and two ML-20 Rotary Launch systems. The ML-20 is a relatively new design, but is finding favor with the NIF Navy. Instead of a self-loading tube or battery, the ML-20 uses a rotating drum holding 6 proton torpedoes. The rotary design allows the torpedoes to be fired in quick succession, putting a flight of 6 into space in a tight group, rather than in a staggered line as with most standard launchers. The drum is reloaded from the internal magazines, so salvoes of 6 torpedoes can be launched in 5-second intervals. On the Cougar, this means that salvoes of 12 torpedoes can be fired at point-blank range using up the space a single-tube launcher would take. In addition, the ML-20 is designed to accept multiple types of rounds, with a configurable magazine and feed. The launcher can even fire MG-19 Capital-Grade Proton Torpedoes (though these do not fit in the drum, and must be launched one at a time per launcher.) Secondary armament consists of four quad laser cannon turrets, one dorsal, one ventral, and one each on the port and starboard sides. If the design has a weakness, it is in its specialization. Everything on the vessel is intended to support its main duties, and every square centimeter of onboard space is packed with engines, shield generators, and sensors and ECM. The crew of 20 is fairly tiny for a capital ship, and lacks much capacity for boarding, though the vessel has adequate berthing space and amenities for long deployments. | ![]() Picture courtesy of Panic Struck Productions, for non-commercial use. *ORIGINAL DESIGN* Specifications:Name/Type: SR-7 ‘Cougar’ Strike CorvetteDesigner/Manufacturer: Deacon Caine/Sienar Fleet Systems Designation: Corvette Crew: 20 Length: 120 Speed: 90 MGLT / 1,050 Kph Attack Speed: 110 MGLT, Boost Hyperdrive: x1 Shield Rating: 500 SBD (750 on Boost) Hull Rating: 150 RU Weapons: 4 Heavy Turbolaser Cannons (fixed forward), 4 Quad Laser Cannon Turrets, 2 ML-20 Rotary Launch systems Fighter Complement: None.
