The Defender project was based on three ships: a starfighter, a carrier for the starfighter, and a Star Destroyer to escort the carrier. The project was a failure - only one of the Defender carriers ended up actually carrying the Defender fighter, and the Star Destroyer was considered too expensive and prestigous to actually be used during the New Republic's demilitarization phase. Like other New Class designs, the Defender carrier was built on an already proven ship type, in this case the Majestic-class Heavy Cruiser's schematics. Typically they are modified to carry at least three E-Wing squadrons with some ships dedicated to K-Wing bombers. Although classified as an Assault Carrier, it only has anti-figher weaponry - perhaps was the designation more in mind of its strong shields and troop carrying and deployment capacity. Some ships of this type have also been refitted with tractor beams.
