MC80-class Star Cruiser | |
|
Mon Calamari designs uses a different classification system. The Liberty class is identified
as a model MC80 Star Cruiser, which is typically called "Wingless MC80" by non-calamarians,
often confused with other MC80s. All early Mon Calamari cruisers were originally civilian
ships designed for pleasure cruises andexploration and colonization. The bridge is made for
Calamarians only. View screens and monitors matches the Calamarian visiual spectrum, which
looked distorted to most other species. Some controls can only be operated in movement
control chairs, which is perfectly natural for Mon Calamarians but nearly impossible for
other species to use. The Liberty have less firepower than Imperator-class Star Destroyers,
but can take more fire. When the Mon Calamari joined the Rebel Alliance, these ships were converted for military use - the only heavy ships in the rebel fleet at the time. In the conversion process, most viewports were covered by armour plating, and modular blisters were fitted to the outside hull. They contain house weapons, sensors, shield generators, observation decks and other systems. Every Mon Calamari cruiser is practically hand made to be a work of art which makes each one unique. It also makes them difficult and costly to build, repair and maintain, and for this reason, the New Republic began to abandon the old Calamari cruisers about 13 years after the Battle of Endor. The "New Class" ship program was designed to replace them. Since the Mon Calamari could not build many cruisers, both due to shipyard limitations and the difficulty of the ships themselves, they did everything they could to improve their combat lasting. This included multiple redundant systems and backup shield generators, typical aspects of all Calamari starships ever since. Backup generators does not add to the ships protection. However, if a regular generator is lost, a backup can take its place within the minute, making Calamari ships notoriously difficult to destroy. |
