The Nebula-class was referred to as a "Star Defender" in the New Republic, since the
denomination "Star Destroyer" reminded too much of the Empire's starships. and hence, the
Nebula is also known as a "Defender-class Star Destroyer", or even a "Pocket Star Destroyer".
Another reason for the confusing "Defender" name was its temporary involvement in the failed
Defender project, which was meant to build a carrier, a fighter, and a cruiser, all bearing
the same name and meant to work in conjunction. First unveiled some eleven years after the
Battle of Endor, the Nebula-class was considered one of the "new class" starships produced
for the New Republic's Navy. They saw limited production as the New Republic down-sized its
military after the peace treaty with the Imperial Remnant. These ships are quite rare - only
ten were originally built, with one more every year. They are considered too precious to
waste in pitched battle, so they are typically kept in patrols and defence fleets near the
Core Worlds.At the time of the battle of N'zoth, it was claimed to be the best-defended ship
in the galaxy, with virtually impervious armor plating and shields. This is obviously
exaggerated. The Nebula is only 65% of the size of an ISD Mk II, but sports the same
firepower, with 62% improved fire control, and 11% stronger shields. The missile launchers
are not included, they could potentially give the Nebula a maximum of 36% more firepower.
It also requires much less crew and maintenance. However, these advantages comes with a
price. The Nebula-class carries much less troops and supplies enough for only 5 months of
operations. These differences falls perfectly in line with the NR New Class warship design
philosophy at the time.
The sensor array is something of a disappointment, roughly 50% weaker than the comparable
ISD. Of note is the lateral thruster design which gives the ship unusually good
maneuverability. On the whole, it is still a very capable, relatively cheap starship highly
suitable for space battle and bombardment, easily making it the most powerful of the
"New Class" designs.
