Aerith remained quiet after Rikku's effort to be technical. There were ways to overcome some of the setbacks a portable generator would make, but since no one was asking for her opinion, she wasn't going to give free advice about it at this point. Listening to Jasper speak, the conversation shifted to his past service with the Empire. She turned her head back down to the datapad and read, hiding her anger. No government seemed to give a damn about what happened on Arkania be it the Federation, the New Republic or the Old Empire. She pretended to show little interest when Iaex spoke, asking for details about Jasper's return to the Empire. Part of her was curious as she wanted to hear the more cheerful and happy tales people had about their upbringings because she maintained they would have had better pasts than she did.

Her interest in galactic history spanned about as deep as her interest for galactic politics, which was to say, it didn't go very far at all. Battle of Endor, Battle of this, Battle of that... And yet the galaxy is still at war. Kind of fitting that we're leaving it all behind then. Aerith loved the more technical things in life, the inner workings of a hyperdrive, the combustion manifolds of a chemical rocket, the actuating mechanism of a blaster, all of that stuff could keep her transfixed for days. Hence why I'm a lowly mechanic on a ship full of people like an arrogant know-it-all girl, a prick packing a gun bigger than his ego and a Dark Jedi with more spare time on his hands than I even have...

"Ah, the petty mechanic whose personal space is bigger than the whole ship. Respect your fellow crew members or you'll end up in the brig again, mark my word."

Oranos Huntlong stood in the shadows of the library, holding a datapad full of information on Sith lore. He had always been interested in the Sith, but he had never found the time. Now...he had all the time in the world. Being an interrogator for the NIF, especially on ICE, was not a busy job; nor was being a Zero-G Trooper. So, he made his day keeping the ship in order, at least for the civilians. Mostly scum, but a few good ones.

"Ah, the petty mechanic whose personal space is bigger than the whole ship. Respect your fellow crew members or you'll end up in the brig again, mark my word."

Rikku glanced up as soon as the words reached her ears. She glared at the man who so rudely opened his mouth. Rikku's hand clenched and her eyes seemed to light on fire as he continued...

"As for the war efforts of the glorious New Imperial Federation, as long as we have the loyal Dark Jedi on our side, no force in this or any galaxy will be able to stop us. Perhaps, if we become damaged, we might even be able to colonize a planet....wouldn't that be wonderful? We might find more Wookiees to slaughter; I was there, it was glorious!"

He so deserves to be put in the medical ward for such remarks. No race is inherently better than any other. This fracking human-centric prick! Not even the 'humans' I am familiar with have any such delusions. Humanity no matter its form is not any better or worse than any other species. The faster he gets that into his primate mind the better it will be for him...

Rikku's voice when she spoke in retort was well laced with derision, contempt and to some degree hate. "You are a pathetic fool! If you are of the mind that as a human you are the most superior lifeform in the universe, you would be mistaken. Humanity as does every other species has its merits and its faults. There are great nonhuman civilizations that reached levels of glory that the 'Human Empire' under Palpatine failed to approach. Humanity if anything has the gold medal for being proliferates like a bunch of rats. Except, these 'rats' have gotten the idea that they are better than the others they share the cage with.

In case you forgot, the NIF is not like the Galactic Empire. The Empire would have fallen no matter what due to its policies. You can't fight against an entire galaxy of hostile species. No matter how powerful, skilled or intimidating a single Sith Lord is he will fall if he makes practically everyone his enemy. They are not omniscient or omnipotent anymore than the Jedi. So, move past your pathetic jaded mindset and accept reality. Or did you forget that people like you are the very vast minority. You human-centric prig!"

Rikku noticed the look that she was getting from Iaex... In addition, she then noticed the girl Aerith looking at her as well. Only then did she realize that her hand was still clenched. Her eyes meet Iaex's and she wanted him to know that she didn't hate humans or him. She just wanted people to realize that they weren't superior to another. Their abilities or skills might be better than someone else's. Yet, they were not automatically better because they were a human, twilek, arkanian etc.

If Iaex read her mind, he would have found out why... That her words were not because of some deep-seated superiority complex or disdain for humanity. It was a caring and passionate warning of a friend or a lover.

Long ago, he would have seen there was a lot of tensions in her home galaxy. There was one race that thought they were better than everyone else. More specifically, that everyone else was like the fly on the wall. It annoys you and you squish its life out. Those people eventually realized their mistaken perception but only at the end of a long and bloody retaliation. Holed up on their homeworld, alone without any allies and no hope of survival. The last they managed to say before the death and destruction erased them, "We were wrong..."

All their power and prestige had been for naught. Their war machine was powerful and disciplined. Yet, the justice and self-preservation of the others drove their enemy into the ground. No number of superweapons or genetic soldiers or droid armies could stop that vengeful march. Their fate was sealed as soon as they acted upon their delusions. It was how it always had been and will be.

Jasper had been about to answer about how the New Imperial Federation had everything the Old Emire had lacked when someone else spoke up. As Jasper listened at watched he saw Rikku tense and grow far angrier than he had ever seen her. He couldn’t blame her either. She had good reason to be pissed off and so did Aertih, but he doubted that either of them knew how Jasper would react to what the man said next.

If looks could kill the man would already be dead. Not just by Rikku either. Jasper slowly found himself getting out of his chair and standing turning to look at the intruder with a look of malice and rage in his eyes. The man was far taller than even Jasper, but that mattered little to him. The squad who usually worked with Jasper had long since discovered that you simply didn’t drudge up memories and those kinds of sentiments around him, especially if he had a weapon on hand.

Sadly, he didn’t. The things that spewed out of that man’s mouth were exactly the kinds of reasons he had left the Empire in the first place. Jasper had returned to Imperial Service after he found out about the fact that for once this New Imperial Federation wasn’t full of bigots, racists, and sexists. Sometimes Jasper was an ass, sure, but never would he do that stuff to another person just because of their race, gender, species, or religion. He was an equal opportunity offender. He did it to everyone equally. For a moment he wished he had his chaingun with him, but he let it pass still staring at the man angrily.

“I’m with Rikku on this one. You best take yourself and your attitude outta here. Cause as I was about to tell Lightsaber Guy here that the Imperial Civil War, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I came back into the Imperial fold because the Federation was actually a decent group of people who actually respected all sentient life. Doing those horrible things was not glorious.” He said putting his hands down on the table in front of him and looking at the man hard.

“Why? Because I had the honor of serving under a non-human commander. He was only strategist that the Old Empire had that was worth a god damn. Mitth'raw'nuruodo, otherwise known as Grand Admiral Thrawn. When he died and I got merged into one of the regular Imperial Army Factions they sent us to fight in their damned names, not for the ideals of the Empire. She’s right. Us humans aren’t better. We just pump out more kids than the rest. You wanna fight a Wookiee go ahead, just don’t ask me to clean up the mess when its done turnin’ your body to mush.” He said.

Jasper didn’t look at the others. He had no idea how they would react to this reaction to was so different for him He never defended people, but then again no one had ever talked about non-humans the way that guy had. Thrawn was the man who gave him purpose in life. If anything had earned his full hearted defense, it was that.

Things were going well enough, and it seemed that Jasper was willing and about to answer Iaex’ question about what exactly his draw to the New Imperial Federation had been, when out of a darkened corner of the library a man stepped out to deliver some humanocentric diatribe harkening back to the days of the Empire of old. The Empire which forced Force sensitives such as my parents into hiding in order to avoid outright extermination.

The datapad clasped in his hands looked to be displaying information on the ancient Sith – doubtless something Iaex had read long before in his time on the expedition, but with distinctly different eyes than this man had read it. Before the Dark Jedi could so much as utter a word, Rikku had already stepped in with a particularly harsh condemnation of his statements, followed shortly by Jasper’s comment, specifically his defense and high regard for the Chiss Grand Admiral Mitth’raw’nuruodo who had so successfully led the remnants of the Empire that he may have singlehandedly restored its former glory, were it not for his death.

Stepping forward for his own comment, Iaex’ voice was calm, “Watch your words, Lieutenant. The ideals you so desperately cling to are but the last vestiges of an old regime. I have traveled the galaxy and met many species with vast and fascinating cultures and histories; species who have made contributions to the galaxy greater than what you or I can imagine. There are still those who believe in humanocentrism, but their numbers dwindle by the year. I assure you, this expedition is the last place you will find them in large numbers. Where we are going there will not be humans, and yet I am positive we will encounter many fascinating species of aliens as varied as any in our own galaxy – possibly more – with their own contributions and developments.”

His last comment hinted in part at what he already knew, but was plain for everyone to see – ICE was the first successful extragalactic expedition that had been launched from the galaxy, and the first time humans had left its protection where they were dominant, heading out into the vast unknown where vast dangers and riches of wisdom awaited them.

Oranos was rather dumbfounded by the accusations of him being humanocentric, and quickly tried to defend himself, but was interrupted by the Dark Jedi. At his remarks, Oranos had had enough.

"Hold on, Dark Jedi! And the rest of you! All I said was that I can't wait to fight another race like the Wookiees, and I have the right to hate all Wookiees if I wish; but do not say I am humanocentric! I'm not human! I am an Epicanthix from Panatha; I am look human, but trust me, it is far from the truth....

Now, let's get three things straight. First, Lt. Cain, I do not care about your exploits or your military history. Your parents could have died in a fire and I would not care; why? Cause we have nothing in common, and due to that, I care nothing about what happens to you. Not to mention your cowardice by running away from the Empire, only to come back and think that we will simply forget that you peed your pants when we started talking about things you couldn't understand.

Secondly, I heard a female voice speaking. Why she is in the library is a good question to normally begin with, but instead I shall ask: why should I care what you think? Or, why did you dare speak to me? I wasn't even talking to you, you are an engineer, a lower class than I am.

Lastly, I am not afraid of a Dark Jedi. My father was a member of Palpatine's Shadow Guard, and he died from the actions of the Rebels. It does not matter how intimidating you try to be, because I will never be effected by it. And from what I've heard, you are more Jedi than Dark...."

"And from depths of the Kavasa did their legend arise that the dacnomaniacs of this our second coming-" David Ishmael broke off of reading the ancient text and frustratedly tossed it on top of the others. He loomed over the table where his mound of manuscripts lay. "Where is it? Someone has to have kept a record..." he muttered to himself, "They always keep records."

He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. Often times answers to archaic puzzles he endeavored to piece together could be found by reading the histories. And where better to read the histories than at the library? Unfortunately he wasn't making much headway. Though the records mentioned the "Depths of Kavasa" none of them seemed to describe what it actually was, but David had several theories. He couldn't quite find proof for his theories yet and that was what frustrated him. Somehow Kavasa was linked to the ancient Gree. He suspected the "Depths" were their hypergates. Or maybe a very large hypergate. He suspected that the 'dacnomaniacs' were the last of the Rakata, but he couldn't be quite sure.

The frustrating thing was that no one mentioned the Celestials. He'd been sure that they had had a hand in helping the Gree with their technology, but they were utterly separated from what he had read. He fiddled absentmindedly with a polyhedron, a souvenir from Tython, and pondered over this great mystery.

From behind several index shelves David heard harsh voices in tones that nearly crossed the civilized line for a library. "This can't be good," he muttered, his hand tightening around the polyhedron. Ishmael moved toward the voices, a bit irritably... true. It was a library after all. What he saw when he emerged from the shelves was a group of motley individuals, one of them was speaking hotly to the rest and apparently defiant. The bullheaded ones often stirred up the rest. They were the ones who started wars... though others often goaded them into starting the war in the first place.

He extended a hand in a calming gesture, "Is everything alright in here?"

OOC:
Chupa, seriously expand the bio. there is next to nothing to go off of... Also, based on the description of Epicanthix, and the note on "near-human": http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Near-Human. His comment as to his species could be corrected and/or commented on. Btw, one of my characters is an Epicanthix (Maximus). As mentioned in several other sources, they are classified as a sub-species of human-stock.

"Secondly, I heard a female voice speaking. Why she is in the library is a good question to normally begin with, but instead I shall ask: why should I care what you think? Or, why did you dare speak to me? I wasn't even talking to you, you are an engineer, a lower class than I am."

Rikku was deciding whether she wanted him castrated, diced or burned to death. Either way, this guy was acting in a way that completely countermanded himself. If anything he said could be believed that is. Not to mention, the guy should be happy one of her old classmates wasn't here. She figured being shot with a Gallente shotgun wasn't pleasant. Well, she had seen the holes left in people from them. Especially, as he would be dead within a second, two at most. He could just as easily be killed with nova-knives or the grenade-firing mass-driver. If she was especially cruel, call down an orbital strike from a friendly capsuleer. He would be dead and she would be in a new clone. Either way, the man was lucky to be on-board ICE and not anywhere where his abrasiveness would earn him a death sentence. Though a duel to the death against a 'superior' opponent would be the more likely outcome.

Rikku quietly took a breath and calmed herself. Then she addressed the man who was intolerably abrasive, "First, learn your insignia, I am also a Lieutenant in the Army. Secondly, as you can see on my uniform, I have combat pins for the Battle of Balmorra. Thirdly, I suggest you pay close attention to the insignia next to the NIF Army-ICE one. That would be Balmorran Planetary Defense Force.

As to being 'lower class', just remember that you would be dead or fighting with a stick without engineers and mechanics. So, next time, if you plan on having a working blaster when or if you are on a combat mission; learn to show some respect. On a similar note, it would be an accomplishment if you could be more insulting and abrasive towards your fellow officers." Rikku smirked as she raised a finger and continued before the man could interject, "Oh wait! That would be disrespect and a court-martial offense. Though, I would be not suprised if it was reduced to a month in the brig..."

Then a smirk spread across Rikku's face as she finished pointedly, "In case you forgot, you Epicanthix are nothing more than a sub-species of humans. You are biologically no different. The only difference you possess is a slightly higher muslce-density. The result is your 'increased' strength compared to the human-baseline. Therefore, strictly speaking, you are a human. Just a different race that makes up the species."

Rikku than smiled at the man that had just walked up and spoke. "Oh, nothing is wrong per-se. Just an abrasive individual that seems to enjoy being a troublemaker. I am Lt. Uesugi and I also am hold the rank of Associate Engineer in the Army Corp of Engineers. And may I have the pleasure of making your acquaintance?"

As soon as Iaex finished speaking, the newcomer immediately responded with apparent frustration and ignorance in equal parts. Considering the nickname I got as soon as arriving here, I wonder what Aerith has thought up for this one. She had remained quiet so far, but was clearly as disturbed by his comments as the others in the somewhat-newly-acquainted group had been.

As soon as Rikku had finished speaking, Iaex decided to add his own comment, “Whatever your reasons for hating the Wookiees then, you would do well to avoid making such comments openly, especially in the library. This is a place for learning and education, not argument and conflict.” Iaex added a hint of a smile with his first commentary, trying to smooth out issues as best he could before things boiled over. “Second, I strongly recommend you not make disparaging remarks about your fellow crewmembers. If you find no interest in the exploits of Lieutenant Cain, or believe Aerith and Rikku not worthy of your attention, it is better that you hold your tongue. They are all worthy officers of the Federation, without whom this expedition could not function properly.” Rikku's knowledge of specific insignia and their significance was quite impressive. Iaex could recognize the departmental insignia and ranks, but was somewhat more hard-pressed when it came to minor details. As for the specifics of his species, Iaex was likewise unfamiliar with the many divisions of humanity, and it made a good deal of sense that this man who looked human - though significantly larger - was still human.

As Iaex finished saying this, another voice came from yet another man stepping out to the small group – obviously disturbed from his own study by the confrontation that had broken out between those present. He was not wearing a military uniform of any sort, which most likely identified him as a civilian. Probably one of the many scientists and researchers aboard, trying to prepare for the expedition of a lifetime once we get to the next galaxy.

“I believe everything is under control here,” Iaex apologized, “I’m horribly sorry for this disturbance.”

Turning once again back to the giant in the corner, Iaex finished off with his final response, “As for your opinion of me – I couldn’t care less what you think. Your father served the Empire and died for a cause he believed in, I suggest you not tarnish his memory by drawing him into this.”

Aerith closed her eyes when the newcomer arrived and made his opening comment, her gut reaction to draw her blaster and do to the man the same she had done to Rikku except this time she might have actually pulled the trigger. She was too busy controlling her anger and reflexes and knee-jerk reaction to mount an effective response, which was very uncharacteristic of her but ending up in the brig, again, wasn't on the top of her to-do list at the moment and she knew that people were fickle and could just as easily turn on her as they did to this supposed Lieutenant who was tossing his yap around like a rancor with an overabundance of foodstuffs to feast upon. The others remained very civil towards the rude officer which was more than she thought possible, especially after he revealed his xenophobic and misogynist view, classic Empire and something Aerith knew about. Worse yet, he seemed to think he was above people like Rikku and herself, not just because he was a human male but because he was a military officer and not a mechanic or engineer. That alone made Aerith's blood boil and her hands which were thankfully hidden beneath the table, were clenched into fists so tight the knuckles were turning white, not unlike her true skin colour.

She listened to the exchange, seething more and more with each word Oranos spoke. Right after the last words he spoke, Aerith was about to leap to her feet and tackle the bastard when a familiar voice kept her down. The Doctor she had spoken with had appeared suddenly, his timing so impeccably bad that she nearly disregarded the thought that he might recommend to the Vicerene that the mechanic be monitored and given medical treatment for her behavior and outbursts. Damn you! Why did you have to show up now? Oranos' second to last comment was really burning her up inside and for the first time in her life, she felt truly conflicted.

If she were still living her old life, the man would have a nice hole between his eyes right now, or, at the very least, a few missing teeth, but now, on a warship in an organized military structure, Aerith had codes of conduct to uphold and it dictated that, no matter how badly someone insulted you, pushed you around or even harmed you, fighting back or causing any sort of physical harm in return was not the proper way to tell them to stop. Vigilante justice was not only frowned upon, it was punishable by brig. Making matters worse, Oranos was the sort of person that fighting back with words would only make him spit back more vile and stabbing words of his own.

No one seemed to take kindly to Oranos, save for Ishmael, and it was surprising to see even Jasper appearing to be rubbed the wrong way. Guess we all have a common foe now, the enemy of my enemy is my friend or some such. Knowing she was already the black sheep in the group and knowing that Oranos would not stop, she got to her feet as he opened his mouth to speak again in response to Rikku's and Iaex's last words and faced the man who was a lot taller than she had expected him to be, towering above her with his thick set frame that looked like he could punch holes through TIE fighter wings with ease. He looked mildly amused that she was finally reacting to him.

"Now you listen to me," she hissed in a low tone that only he would hear, her eyes throwing daggers at him, "I don't really care about Wookiees either, but I respect you even less but if this is how you plan on making a first impression, than maybe you should go introduce yourself to the Vicerene." Before he could retort or snicker bemusedly at her little comment, she suddenly took one of her clenched fists and clocked him in the jaw with a vicious uppercut that he was neither prepared for nor fully expecting as she had made it appear that she was simply going to be like the others and talk back. The blow caused him to stagger back and, spitting on him, she shook out her hand that had punched the man in the lower jaw and said more loudly for the others to hear, "That should help speed up your introduction to the woman who supposedly runs the show around here."

Glancing at the others for a moment, just long enough to catch their expressions, before returning her focus back to the Lieutenant, ready to fight the man if necessary, she said with a knowing smile, "Guess I'm going back to the brig when this is done huh?"

[OOC: Well, hopefully Chupa is still alive and somewhere...So, for the sake of this thread, I am proactively tying the loose string.]

Rikku's surprise at Aeriths straightforward action quickly turned to slight amusement. Before the man could retailiate, he was restrained by the doctor. Rikku moved and put her arm across in front of Aerith. The man, Oranos, looked like he would really like to get Aerith back. Rikku made eye contact with the other gal, shook her head slightly. At this point the man was very angry and muttering in a threatening tone.

Rikku looked back at the man, "You provoked that response by insulting her. Now, you are going to threaten as well..?!" Rikku touched the comlink on her wrist gauntlet. "STARS, I have a man that needs to be detained. Threatening the well-being of a female crew member, among other things. Thank you!" Rikku turned back to Oranos and took out her binders. "As a Security Officer, I am putting you under arrest for threatening a female crew mate, disrespect of your fellow officers and gender discrimination. The former two charges will be and are serious violations of the Law. The third is merely a misdemeanor that would normally require some counseling and community service. My recommendation to the Discipline Panel will partily depend on your cooperation. That understood?"

The man nodded that he understood. He looked at Rikku with anger in his eyes while she slapped the binders on his wrists. Rikku was happy he didn't try to resist or harm her. A few moments later, the STARS arrived and four of them escorted Oranos away. Rikku then turned to to talk to the remaining officer, three men stood behind him.

"The Aircrewman did strike the man. However, I believe that it was intentionally provoked. Therefore, it is my recommendation to write a warning to contact STARs in future and leave it at that."

The squad officer nodded and acknowledged Rikku's comments and recommendation. He then talked to Aerith and the two guys...
